ABOUT AEA

History of Alpha Epsilon Alpha

Our story began on April 23rd 1915 when our founders Myra Jones and Mary Emma Griffith, both of Lambda, organized AEA as a chartered alumnae club along with ten other AXO alumnae clubs that year. The National Council had determined in 1914 that alumnae groups must first exist for one year before being established as a chapter.

In September of 1915, we commenced our year with the first Tea at Ye Old (Pierce) Mill in Rock Creek Park. It was hoped to be a "successful and prosperous year" as we welcomed several new members into our club, as noted by founder Mary Emma Griffith in the November edition of The Lyre.

During and after WWI, our chartered club continued altruistic work by providing aid for the housing problems in DC, the local orphanage and in giving to our national philanthropy.

In 1922, the National Council established the First Permanent Central Office, and our founder Mary Emma Griffith served as the secretary-editor in charge of its administration.

Finally in 1934, AEA was installed as an alumnae chapter by national president, Ethel Meade Van Auken, Lambda in the Garbo Room of the Shoreham Hotel.

A year later in June 1935, AXO held its 50th Golden Jubilee Convention. Traveling by train, they started in Indiana, then stopped in West Virginia and ended their journey in Washington, D.C. Our first AEA chapter president Helen Rhodes Grubb, Theta welcomed and hosted tours of the District for our sisters from around the country, including our founders Bertha Deniston Cunningham, Estelle Leonard, Nellie Gamble Childe, and Olive Burnett Clark all of Alpha! The Shoreham Hotel was also the location on the Convention Banquet.

Only a few years later in 1937, the main interest of AEA became Beta Rho at American University, as it remains today, along with Gamma Theta at University of Maryland.
